What do boxelder bugs look like?

Boxelder Bug Anatomy Diagram

Boxelder Bugs are “true bugs.”

They belong to the same family as stink bugs and cicadas. They’re known as a scentless bug group, but if they’re squished, they release a foul smell.

Boxelder bugs are more of a nuisance than a danger.

While boxelder bugs do not usually bite or cause structural damage, these pests tend to invade in large numbers and their eating habits leave trees and fruit damaged or scarred. Crushed boxelder bugs stink, leave stains, and attract other pests, such as carpet beetles.

Boxelder bugs don’t hibernate – they overwinter.

Boxelder bugs can’t survive freezing cold temperatures, so in the fall, they find a place to hunker down and hide for the winter. Once they’ve found a good place to stay, boxelder bugs completely stop moving during cold weather to conserve energy and heat. They do not actually hibernate, though; they sometimes “wake up” and become active on warm winter days, occasionally resuming fall habits like sunning on reflective surfaces.

Boxelder bugs look similar to Kissing Bugs, which aren’t harmless.

Kissing bugs are found in the lower half of the United States, are mostly active at night, and feed on the blood of mammals, including humans. Kissing bugs’ droppings carry a parasite causing Chagas disease, transmitted through their bites. The disease leads to symptoms like fever, rash, and swollen eyes, requiring prompt anti-parasitic treatment. It’s important to know the difference between these pests, but when in question, trap it, don’t squash it. Read more here on the CDC website.

Pests that can be confused with boxelder bugs.

Boxelder bugs are often confused with other insects that look similar such as milkweed bugs, red-shouldered bugs, and kissing bugs.

You might already know for sure that you have an boxelder bug problem. Here are a couple of the most common signs of an infestation.

Boxelder bugs are social creatures, and you’ll often find them in large gatherings on the sides of houses, cars, windows, window wells, or trees.

Boxelder bugs prefer warm places, so you can find them outdoors on the south or west sides of buildings. After making their way indoors, they often seek out warm surfaces and windows where sunlight streams in.

They will also feed on fruit trees. If these trees are in your yard, you will most likely see these pests.

    Boxelder Bug FAQs

Should I worry about boxelder bugs?

Even though boxelder bugs don’t transmit diseases, avoid human food, and won’t cause structural damage, you don’t want them taking up residence in your home. They tend to invade in large numbers and can be a nuisance due to potential surface staining from their excrement. They also emit a foul odor when squashed. The best defense against boxelder bugs is prevention. Call Fox Pest Control today, and we’ll protect your home against invaders of all shapes and sizes!

    Do boxelder bugs bite?

While it is very rare for boxelder bugs to bite, they do have piercing-sucking mouthparts that can puncture the skin, causing irritation and resulting in a red spot similar to a mosquito bite. They do not transmit disease. Boxelder bugs are covered under our Home Protection Plan – call today and get started on year-round protection from pests.

    What attracts boxelder bugs?

Boxelder bugs gather near homes for warmth, shelter, and food sources like maple, ash, and boxelder trees. They are drawn to sunny surfaces like windows and homes with southern or western exposure. When you subscribe to our Home Protection Plan, we protect your home year-round by creating a barrier that pests can’t get through. That means your home is off-limits for these annoying insects, and if they do somehow get through, we’ll come back and take care of them for free!
