What do bed bugs look like?

Bed Bug Anatomy Diagram

Bed bugs are like vampires of the insect world.

They feed on the blood of animals and humans. Adult bed bugs are flat, oval-shaped insects, initially brown but turning reddish and swollen after a blood meal. They are about the size of an apple seed.

Bed bugs are hitchhikers!

If you’re wondering where bed bugs come from, they’re transported by people, usually on luggage, clothing, gym bags, or purses. They can also hitch a ride on furniture.

Bed bugs can be discovered in various locations.

But are most commonly found in single-family homes, apartments, and hotels. Other places bed bugs are frequently found are:

  • nursing homes
  • schools
  • daycare centers
  • offices
  • college dorms
  • hospitals
  • stuffed animals
  • wheelchairs
  • airplanes
  • school buses
  • theaters
  • bedside lamps

Bed bugs are more prevalent in urban areas.

This is due to larger populations, apartment living, and increased foot traffic – all of which help the rapid spread and breeding of these pests.

Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs do not transmit disease.

Some people may experience itchy red welts or a more severe reaction, but bed bugs are not considered dangerous for most people.

Bed bugs are not necessarily attracted to unsanitary conditions.

They have been found in luxury hotels and resorts, indicating that their presence is not determined by the cleanliness of the living conditions in which they are found. They are drawn to their hosts for blood meals and hitchhike their way into anywhere they can get that meal.

Pests that can be confused with bed bugs.

There are many different types of pests around the world that people confuse with bed bugs. Some of the most common are fleas and ticks. It’s important to know the difference, as each one needs a different type of treatment

You might already know for sure that you have an bed bug problem. Here are a couple of the most common signs of an infestation.

Bed bug bites are small, red, and itchy and look similar to bites from fleas and mosquitoes. They are typically seen on arms, hands, and legs in small clusters or zigzag lines of 3-4 bites. It may take up to two weeks to see the bites, and they can occasionally lead to hives or blistering.

Small, dark spots resembling ink dots indicate bed bug droppings containing digested human blood. These spots are seen around bed bug hiding spots like mattress seams and folds, zippers, and all sides of the furniture.

Bed bugs feed on blood and become engorged. Moving while you sleep may crush a bed bug that has just finished feeding, creating red or rust-colored stains. These are not as common to see as fecal spots.

Translucent, tan-colored bed bug exoskeletons, or molt, are found near hiding places. Bed Bugs shed or molt several times before reaching adulthood. If multiple exoskeletons are found, it’s an indication of a bed bug infestation.

Musty odor in the bedroom, untraceable to a source, might indicate a bed bug infestation. The smell comes from a mix of dead bugs, live bug pheromones, and feces. It intensifies as the infestation worsens, often resembling rust and moldy laundry.

    Bed Bug FAQs

How does Fox treat bed bugs?

Some pests are unique and require special pest control services. At Fox Pest Control, we offer an effective and efficient two-step bed bug treatment for bed bug infestations. For more information on how we can help you with your bed bug problem, call us today!

How do I check for bed bugs?

Finding bed bugs early is really important to stop them from spreading. Dealing with a small infestation is cheaper and easier than handling a big one. However, spotting small infestations is tricky, as bugs like carpet beetles can be mistaken for bed bugs. If you misidentify them, it gives the bugs more time to spread in your home or move to someone else’s place and start a new infestation. That’s why it’s a good idea to call in the experts. If you suspect you have bed bugs in your home, call Fox Pest Control for a free inspection. Let us take care of the problem for you!

Bed bugs are only about the width of a credit card. If a crack is large enough to hold a credit card, a bed bug could hide there as well. Some of the places you might find bed bugs hiding are:

    • Around the bed, you might find them near the piping, seams, tags, and cracks on the bed frame and headboard
    • In the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, and in the folds of curtains
    • Drawer joints, under loose wallpaper, behind wall hangings, and around appliances

Do bed bugs bite? What do bed bug bites look like?

Yes. Bed bug bites are red, itchy bumps often seen in clusters or lines, with some people experiencing hives or blistering. Everyone reacts differently to bed bug bites; some people may not react at all or have a very delayed reaction. It’s important to contact your healthcare provider if you are concerned about bed bug bites.

What if I am bitten by a bed bug?

If you suspect you’ve got bed bug bites, don’t panic. Bed bug bites can be bothersome but cannot transmit disease like other insects. Avoid scratching the bite to prevent infection. Contact Fox Pest Control today for a free inspection – we’ll take care of your bed bug infestation and bring you peace of mind.

Do bed bugs cause structural damage?

While bed bugs don’t directly damage structures, the presence of a bed bug infestation can affect the value of a property. It’s important to act quickly if you have bed bugs, or the problem will only get worse and continue to spread. If you suspect you’ve got bed bugs, the best response is to call Fox Pest Control as soon as possible.

What’s the best treatment for a bed bug infestation?

Treating your home for bed bugs can be challenging because they’ve become resistant to some pesticides. The fastest and most effective way to get rid of bed bugs is to contact Fox Pest Control.
